This post is a collaboration with TV Licensing (a trademark of the BBC), but all thoughts and experiences are my own – Evening Routine That Actually Works – With the chaos of work, school runs, endless laundry, and trying to remember who’s got PE kit or piano lessons, evenings in our house used to feel like just another part of the daily grind. That is, until we finally figured out a routine that actually works for us. It doesn’t involve strict schedules or elaborate rituals. Instead, it’s something beautifully simple: sitting down together to watch films on TV or our favourite shows live or on BBC iPlayer.
There’s something comforting about the soft glow of the screen, the shared laughs, and even the squabbles over who’s sitting where. Our evening TV time has become more than just something we do—it’s a moment to exhale, reconnect, and be fully present with each other after a busy day. (You can explore what goes into making those films on TV thanks to the BBC TV Licensing Rest & Connect campaign.)

An Evening Routine That Actually Works
Monday Motivation with a Comedy Boost
Mondays are tough, no doubt about it. Everyone’s tired, the inbox is full, and the school bags are heavier than ever. But we’ve found a little ritual that lifts the mood—putting on something funny after dinner. Whether it’s a classic episode of Would I Lie to You? or a cheeky panel show on BBC Two, we gather in the lounge and let the laughter do the work.
Even the kids, though technically not the target audience, love the light-hearted energy. It sets a positive tone for the rest of the week and gives us something to bond over that doesn’t involve homework or household chores.
Midweek Wind-Down with Wildlife
Wednesdays are our “nature night”. When the midweek fatigue sets in, we turn to the calming magic of Planet Earth III. There’s something about those breathtaking landscapes and Sir David Attenborough’s voice that instantly slows everything down.
The kids sit wide-eyed, and we adults feel a little more grounded, less worried about deadlines and more amazed by deep-sea creatures and jungle birds. Watching live or catching up on iPlayer gives us flexibility, but we try to tune in together when possible, just to make it feel like a proper family event.
Friday Film Night – A Crowd-Pleaser
By Friday, we’re all in need of a treat. So, we go old-school with a proper film night. We switch off the phones, pop some popcorn, and take turns picking from what’s on live or recorded from earlier in the week. Sometimes we go for a new release, other times it’s a beloved classic that everyone knows by heart.
We’ve had everything from Paddington to Jurassic Park and even the odd superhero flick. What matters most isn’t the film—it’s the feeling. The sense that we’re all in the same place, at the same time, enjoying something together. It’s the kind of memory-making that’s easy to miss when life gets too fast.
Saturday Sports & Sofa Snacks
Saturday afternoon means one thing: sport. My partner is a massive football fan, while I’ve grown to love the routine of it all—team sheets, match day predictions, and of course, sofa snacks. The kids might not follow every goal or penalty, but they love the energy in the room. It becomes less about the result and more about the shared experience.
Live sport brings something different to our week—excitement, anticipation, and real-time reactions that recorded shows can’t quite match. Even if we only half-watch the game, it brings us together and slows the weekend down in a good way.
Solo Sunday Sessions
While most of our evening routines involve the whole family, I’ve carved out a little Sunday night tradition just for me. After the kids are in bed and the chaos has died down, I make a cuppa, grab a blanket, and settle in for something soothing and a bit indulgent—maybe a BBC drama or even a quiet documentary.
It’s a small moment of solitude that I look forward to all week. Watching live TV gives me a sense of rhythm and knowing that others are probably watching it too makes me feel part of something without having to leave my sofa.
Rest, Reconnect, Repeat
What started as a casual habit has now become our favourite time of the day. These small, shared TV moments help us relax, catch up, and just be together without pressure. Whether watching animals in the wild, cheering on a football team, or laughing at panel shows, live TV and BBC iPlayer have given us a structure that we look forward to.
The BBC TV Licensing Rest & Connect campaign reminded me how powerful those moments can be—how the act of sitting down together to enjoy a programme can shift the energy of an entire day. So if your evenings feel a bit scattered or stressful, maybe the answer isn’t doing more, but doing less—grabbing the remote, claiming your spot on the sofa, and letting the telly do the rest.
